What does the “S” in SAP S/4HANA mean?

SAP has historically codenamed their products. For example: Being one of the first companies to build their application this way back in 1992, the “R” in SAP R/3 stood for “Real-time,” and the “3” stood for 3-tier architecture.

Today, SAP carries on this tradition with their enterprise next generation business suite.  Having “real-time” in its blood, SAP expands on that premise with S/4HANA. This new suite is built on SAP’s advanced “in-memory” platform (SAP HANA), and it is built to drive instant value across all lines of business and industries. SAP chose to use “S” for the word “Simple.”  Simple in UI, simple in Migration, simple to analyze, Simple as in reduced complexity.
